The Tipp Wheelers had two club members competing in the Corkman 3 Day stage race over the May bank holiday weekend. Dermot Radford was representing the club in the A2/A3 race while Richie Bresnan was competing in the A4 race.
Richie took part in the A4 race, consisting of 3 stages over the 3 days. The 8km time trial took place on Saturday evening and Riche put in a good performance to finish in 31st position. Stage 2 on Sunday afternoon was pan flat and Richie sat in the bunch comfortably to the end, not getting an opportunity to get away as everything was being chased down before it had the chance to establish a gap. Bad luck then hit during the final stage as Richie punctured at the half way point of the 67.5km stage, leaving him well behind the main bunch with no chance of chasing them down.

Dermot performed well during the four stages of the race and going into the last stage was 28 seconds off the lead, lying in 13th position overall. On the last stage Dermot attacked hard at the midway point through the second of four laps and together with local man Simon Ryan (riding for Team DMG – Visit Nenagh) and Cathal Moynihan of Tralee CC forged out a gap of 40 seconds. The gap slowly stretched to 60 seconds as the trio worked extremely hard. The bunch behind got organised with the large contingent from Blarney, St Finbarrs, Dungarvan and Carrick Wheelers all doing big turns on the front to reel in the escapees. The bunch got the three riders in their sight after a 30km chase, with just 18k to the finish and with Simon and Cathal sitting up to save a little energy for the finish, Dermot kept the pace up and rode on alone. He lasted a while out on his own before being joined by another couple of riders escaping off the front but following the hard efforts was not able to hang on going up a long drag. After falling back to the main bunch he sat in to the finish, completing the race in 14th position overall, 32 seconds off the lead.

Congratulations to Simon Ryan on a superb performance over the weekend. Simon showed his sprinting abilities by taking a magnificent sprint victory on Stage 1 and followed it up with another 4th place on Stage 3, again taking the bunch sprint only 2 seconds behind 3 escape riders. Simon finished 11th overall, 28 seconds off the lead but can be very happy with his weekend’s performances, giving himself a confidence boost as he prepares to ride the Ras later in the month.
