Stage 3 of the Tipperary Wheelers Club League took place on Thursday 28 July with the second 10 mile time trail of the league. A large number of people missed the first time trail and therefore managed to gain some points in the overall league this week. It was also good to see some people turning out for the first time, including Darren, Keith on his mountain bike and Liam fresh from another impressive Ironman in Austria. It will be interesting to see how Darren and Keith progress over the coming weeks as they become accustomed to time trialling and racing. Thanks to Liam Flanagan who pointed out an error in our calculations where he was recorded with a time one minute quicker than he actually did in the Stage 3 time trial. The tables have been amended below and now we see that Michael Kelly has moved into a 5 point lead over Noel Ryan. Liam slips down to fourth and Dave Stokes (perhaps a man to watch) and David Connor are in joint fifth. Points will become very tight at the next time trial with most competitors having registered a time and those with big improvements this week will find it difficult to improve further next time. Stage 4 details will be added during the week. Stage 3 of the Tipperary Wheelers will take place on Thursday 28 July and will consist of a 10 mile time trial. Sign on will be at 7.15pm in Bansha village with the first rider off at 7.30pm. Points will be awarded based on time improvements from Stage 1 of the league, or those that did not do Stage 1 will be awarded points based on their finishing position within their category. Stage 2 of the Tipperary Wheelers Club League provided some exciting racing. The ladies started proceedings off and Martina, Phyllis and Liz were given a one minute handicap on the Category 3 riders. The five Cat 3 riders were pursued by the eight Cat 2 riders after a 7 minutes 43 seconds wait. Last off were the seven Cat 1 riders, another 3 minutes 37 seconds behind the Cat 2’s. The handicaps proved to be reasonably accurate with the Cat 2’s catching the Cat 3 and Ladies just 1.5km from the finish line. The Cat 1 riders overhauled those that were not able to keep in touch with the main bunch and eventually ran out of road in their chase to finish just 10 seconds behind the main bunch. Harry Towmey took the sprint at the lead of the race to gain maximum points available on the night, followed by Ken Costello taking second and Mike Looby, showing signs of a comeback, took third place. Following results from stage one that leaves Dermot Radford in first place in the league with 29 points, Michael Kelly in second place with 27 points and Liam Flanagan and Noel Ryan sharing third place on 25 points. League positions will be shaken up next week as Stage 3 sees a return to the 10 mile (16.1km) time trial on the same course as Stage 1. Ten points will be awarded to the rider who improves on their Stage 1 time by the biggest margin, followed by nine points for the second best improvement, etc. For those riders that did not take part in the first time trial, they will be awarded points (from a maximum of 10) based on their overall finishing position within their category on the night. Stage 3 sign will take place in Bansha village at 7.15pm on Thursday 28 July with the first rider off at 7.30pm. The time trail will start in Bansha, Stage 2 of the Tipperary Wheelers Club League will be a handicap road race where three groups will start at predefined intervals based on time trial performances from Stage 1. Those that did not do the Stage 1 time trial will be allocated to a category on the night. The points table for the league will be published following Stage 2. Ruaidhri had a good day finishing in 10th position with a time of 1:04:41 and claire finished 8th lady with a time of 1:19:06. Claire also finished 4th Lady in the Canon hayes 10k the night before with a time of 46:56. A busy weekend for the club saw Pat Ryan and Dermot Radford taking part in the Mark Hayden Memorial road race in Kildavin, Co. Carlow on Sunday 17 July, which was hosted by Carlow Cycling Club. With little racing on during the month of July, there was a large field taking on the 3 lap, 90km race. The long circuit proved to be difficult with many long drags and very strong winds hampering riders. With only 10km raced a break of 5 riders got off the front of the bunch and opened up a significant lead. Shortly afterwards two other riders jumped clear, who were soon followed by Dermot. He caught the two riders and together they chased hard to eventually join the five leaders. The breakaway was almost completely closed down in the final kilometre, with the tail end of the eight man group being swallowed up, however the sprint for the line kept the stronger riders just about clear of the bunch to race for the places. Dermot was unlucky to pull his foot out of the pedal twice in the last 100 metres but still managed to finish in third place. Pat also put in an excellent performance, emerging as one of the stronger riders from the bunch to finish in twelfth position. |
