On the 21/08/10 a number of athletes took part in the Gaelforce 65k Challenge in the beautiful scenic and majestic Connemara mountains just outside Westport Co Mayo. This is the fourth year that the adventure has taking place and is broken up into 3 disciplines.
                           22k run/walk.
                           42k cycle
                           1.6 kayak.

6 people from the town-represented Tipperary on the event including two members from the Tipp wheelers cycling club. Tommy Byrnes, Martin Hickey, Tony Delaney, Martin Kirby Jnr, Mattie Crowe, and the brave Karen Ahearne.

Stage 1 It was an early start from a quiet beach just outside Delphi were nearly 2400 competitors set out for a 14k run through tracks, fields, and bogs.

Stage 2 then took us to kilarry harbour where 2 people would share a kayak and paddle across the killary Bay 1.6k to the next stage of the event.

Stage3 Exiting from the kayaks stage, a 4k run across the side of a bog, which proved very tough, brought us to the bike station were the bikes had been dropped off the day before.

Stage4 The bike transition was a welcome factor after all the running. The cycle took us through 32.5k of tough hilly Connemara roads and off road tracks right to the base of the mighty Croagh Patrick Mountain.

Stage 5 The event highlight for all was the huge task that faced every competitor which was the run up and down the holy mountain that proved daunting for everyone involved. The round trip for all up and down was nearly 5k.

Stage6 The final stage was back on the bike, 9.5k cycle/run going around the side of the holy mountain on a very rugged and extreme terrain, where competitors whose choice of bike was a mountain bike, had took full advantage over the competitors with racing bikes. After about 3k of this terrain we then entered back on a sealed road, which took us to down through the quays of Westport to the finish line where thousands of spectators showed up to give support to the competitors.

The finishing times are as follows,

Tommy Byrnes    5hrs 19mins
Tony Delaney       5hrs 39mins
Martin Hickey      5hrs 59mins
Mattie Crowe        6hrs 19mins
Martin Kirby Jnr   7hsr  8 mins
Karen Ahearne      8hrs 28 mins

Well done to all involved.

Tippwheelers Rory Devitt, Pat Ryan and Dermot Radford represented the club in a 36km race in Dungarvan on Sun the 15th of August. The average speed of the race was a fast 39km/h, almost 25mp/h. The race finished with a 3km climb to the finish. Rory Devitt and Pat Ryan performed very well throughout the race, both finished comfortably in the main bunch, Rory carrying out a lot of work at the front of the peloton. Dermot Radford performed excellently to come 4th overall on the day with a good final climb continuing his impressive and improving performances. The club is having a excellent run of results at races around Munster this year. We are just waiting for our first podium finish from one of the lads.

In the photo second from the right is Dermot Radford receiving his 4th place prize.

Everyone in the club has got teamer texts to their phone from time to time about the various training spins going on during the week. These teamers are being sent out by the same individuals all the time, for whatever reason when these people are unable to send a teamer there are no spins organised. Everyone in the club is welcome and encouraged to use the teamer service to send texts to all the other members of the club to let them know when they are training and try and get a group together. Sending teamers is a very easy and efficient method of getting good training rides going.
If anyone in the club is unsure how to use the teamer services just contact any of the following individuals for a quick explanation of the teamer website.
   Dermot Radford: 0863584188
   Brian Devitt: 0876133031
   Rory Devitt: 0879249435
There are 3 simple rules when sending teamers
      1.       Put your name or names on the text, initials will do example B.D, D.R, R.D.
      2.       Put the planned distance and state whether km or miles
      3.       Most importantly use a word to explain the intensity you will be cycling, For instance
            a.       Leisure
            b.      Intervals
            c.       Hills
            d.      Easy
            e.      15mph max
            f.        20mph max
            g.       Etc etc
The reason for putting a word to describe the intensity is as follows, If I say I am doing intervals or hills people know straight away to expect a tough session if they turn up, However if I am due a recovery day or just don’t enjoy cycling hard and I want to go easy I use a word like easy, 15mph max, leisure etc. When members of the club see this they will not turn up and try and drive the pace    of the cycle as this would be bad manners.

Dont have a teamer password
If you have lost your teamer password that was sent out to first day when your account was set up just contact Brian Devitt, Rory Devitt or Dermot Radford and the lads can log on to teamer with their accounts and delete your profile and then use your details to invite you as a new player. You will then be sent a new password and you will be able to send teamers to organise training spins.

The club was represented by Dermot Radford on Sunday the 8th of August in Fermoy, Dermot did very well to come 11th in the race just missing out on the prizes, unfortunately this meant that Dermot had to cover his own petrol money for the day :-) poor aul Dermot.

The final stage of the club league took place this week with Seamus Breen winning the stage with a close finish. Stage six was similar to stage 4 in that they both finished at the top of Christ the king. Dermot Radford preformed excellently to come second and take the overall victory in the league. Rory Devitt came 3rd closely behind Dermot giving himself second overall in the league, Jimmy Hally roared across the line in 4th place followed closely by pat Ryan. Christ the king was climbed with high intensity, I know this as one of our cyclists fell off his bike after crossing the finish line and had to be assisted to his feet, and we won’t mention any names :-).

Congrats to Dermot Radford on his victory in the club league. Shown below on the left is a picture of Dermot from stage 6 of the league, Also if anyone is wondering how hard the climb up christ the king is at the end of a race just click on the picture of the toughest farmer from Kilfeacle Jimmy hally in the centre and see the pain in the mans face. Shown on the right is a picture of the stage winner Seamus Breen. Congrats to Seamus finishing the league with a stage victory.
