Add Comment On Saturday the 11th of Sept in a strong show of support from the Club, 8 members including Tony Merrigan, Martina Byrnes, Phyllis Richardson, Naomi Enright, Denis Fitzgerald, Brian Devitt, Jeremiah Ryan and Keith Kelly completed the 105 km charity cycle from Tipperary town to Tramore this Saturday. The locally organised cycle has been running for a number of years now. This year the cycle donated the money raised to a local nursing home Cluainn Arran providing much needed funds. Well done to the organisers and all those who took on the challenge and cycled down to tramore for a great event The club could not have asked for a better way to finish the racing season, We were close many times this year with many top ten finishes in races. Congrats to Dermot Radford for getting the club its first victory on the road race areana. This victory shows the club is going from strength to strength in our first year. Details of the race and photos are shown below. Hosted by: Comeragh C.C. Location: Waterford The race consisted of three 21.55km laps on a tough “rolling” course with the last 1km climbing at a 2 – 3% gradient to the finish line. Two other climbs around the circuit included a 500m long 5 – 6% climb and a 1km, 4 – 5% climb, both into a headwind. The first lap was at a fast but steady pace and a few breakaways were attempted but none got very far and riders were left hanging off the front to suffer before being pulled back in with ease. Early in the second lap, taking advantage of the lull in the action after turning into the headwind, two riders broke clear of the peloton and no real interest was shown in reeling them back in. The gap grew steadily out to 30 seconds, at the next time check it had grown to 40 seconds, then 50 seconds and heading into the 4 – 5% climb the gap had grown to 1 minute 10 seconds. This sparked the peloton into life and approximately 8 riders attacked and tried to form a breakaway, but it never got far and the peloton pulled it back together. With only 4 or 5 riders interested in trying to pull back the escapees the chases were brief before frustration in the unwillingness of others to help caused the chasers to sit up and give up on the chase. At 9km into the third lap Dermot Radford hit the front once again in an attempt to spark a chase. Danny O’Sullivan of Galtee Wheelers joined in the effort and both riders jumped away to create a small gap on the peloton. They then drove hard to slowly open a gap and first one of the escapees was passed with the second escapee being overtaken shortly afterwards. Danny pushed hard on the climbs with Dermot just about holding his wheel and the gap over the chasing peloton grew. Coming into the final climb up to the finish line the peloton were chasing hard but to no avail. With 100 metres to the finish line Dermot kicked hard and pulled out about 5 bike lengths to take the victory. The peloton finished in a bunch sprint approximately 30 – 40 seconds later. The race stats are as follows: Profile: (see attached) Distance: 64.17km Race time: 1.41.51 Average speed: 37.80km/hr Maximum speed: 62.38km/hr Total climbing: 300m |
